Elliot Anderson says Phil Foden was bouncing off the walls in delight after Manchester City survived his sending off to win Sunday’s controversial derby at Manchester United. The 199th meeting of the cross-town rivals was an action-packed battle marked by two key decisions, including Erling Haaland’s goal being awarded after a lengthy VAR review to secure a 1-0 Old Trafford win.
City’s triumph was made all the sweeter by the fact they were playing with 10 men after Foden was sent off midway through the first half for petulantly kicking out at Bruno Fernandes having been wound up. Asked if the forward was dealing with mixed emotions after the derby win, Anderson said: “Yeah, a bit of both, I guess.
“Obviously, gutted to not play in the full game, but no, he was bouncing up and down in the changing room, as we all were. “It made the game a lot harder and we’ve all came together and it shows real fighting and leadership from the lads. “It wasn’t ideal Phil going off but we all fought for it and, yeah, it changed the way of playing but we’ve done really well at it.”
Erling Haaland's winning goal in Sunday's Manchester derby came in controversial circumstances - and there are still a number of questions left unanswered.
Phil Foden has reacted to his controversial red card in Manchester City's derby win with a post on social media. The Manchester City forward was sent off during a tepid first half at Old Trafford after appearing to kick out at Bruno Fernandes. The sending-off was a point of contention among pundits with Roy Keane and Micah Richards saying the 26-year-old shouldn't have been shown red for the chamllenge.
Foden took to social media after the game, writing: “Unbelievable performance from the lads. Gutted I didn’t get to play my part properly. Proud to be Blue.” He was also seen gesturing “1-0” towards Manchester United fans as he made his way out of Old Trafford, at the end of the game.
Elliot Anderson also joined in the celebrations, posting a crown emoji after being named Player of the Match by Gary Neville on his derby debutThe £116m summer signing from Nottingham Forest was heavily linked with United during the summer transfer window before joining City. Anderson previously referred to City as “the Kings of Manchester” after completing his move.
Pro Ref has admitted an error in awarding Manchester City's winner at Manchester United in their 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick, Lisandro Martinez and Erling Haaland react to Manchester City's controversial winner against Manchester United.
Man City head coach Enzo Maresca:Erling, since he came back from the World Cup, is working very good." For sure, we need to think to give him some rest at some point, because after the World Cup, he cannot continue in the same way all season. "But in this moment, we are happy with his performance, and then the most important thing is that he is happy.
"You can see he is happy, not only today, even day by day in the training sessions. "As much as we keep Erling happy, we are all happy. "How do you say it in English? Happy wife, happy life? We say, happy Erling, happy life. My wife, she will be upset for sure."
Man City head coach Enzo Maresca felt Phil Foden was rightly sent off in the Manchester derby - but Bruno Fernandes had to join him down the tunnel as well. Foden was given his marching orders in the first half for kicking out at Fernandes - after the United midfielder had kicked him first.
Asked about the incident, Maresca replied: "I think Phil Foden's red card is a red card, but I also think that in the same action it's a red card for Bruno Fernandes." I reviewed the action immediately after the red card on the bench. And it's a clear red card for Phil, because it's a reaction." But you can also see in the same action Bruno's intention.
So for me, yes, it's a red card for Phil, but it's also a red card for Bruno." It was not the only contentious moment of the derby as Erling Haaland's winner was controversially allowed to stand even though Enzo Fernandez impacted the build-up to the goal when clearly offside. Referee governing body Pro Ref admitted an "error in judgement" in allowing the goal to stand in a statement at 9pm.
Asked about Man City's winner, Maresca said: "I think Erling was onside and Enzo doesn't interfere with the action."
