Tottenham have been boosted by the return of Pedro Porro for Saturday's trip to Chelsea, live on Sky Sports. But James Maddison is a doubt for the London derby, while left-back Destiny Udogie remains out. Andy Robertson and Omar Marmoush have both recovered from injuries in the win over Coventry to be available to face the Blues.
Asked about Maddison's fitness after his first start in 536 days in which he scored the opener in the 3-1 win over Coventry, Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi said: “In the first three days Maddison didn’t work with us. I don’t know if he’s ready for tomorrow. We can also play with Matyhs Tel, with Marmoush inside, with (Conor) Gallagher. We have more solutions considering Pedro Porro can play.
“I don’t want to take risks because if you analyse this period of football you can see many injuries, not just for Tottenham.” Porro has missed Spurs' last two games after picking up an injury in the 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa in mid-September. But the Spain World Cup winner has recovered from his thigh issue to be available for this weekend.
But De Zerbi remains without winger Savio and midfielder Lucas Bergvall, with the duo still recovering from their injuries. Meanwhile, Dejan Kulusevski's involvement at Chelsea is in doubt after he made his long-awaited return in the win over Coventry.
The forward came on as a substitute after 526 days out, but De Zerbi revealed that although he has "worked well" since, he was in individual training "in the first day" back and did not confirm whether he would be in Saturday's matchday squad.
Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi on Tottenham's dreadful record at Stamford Bridge, where they have won just one of their last 36 league visits:“For me, it's one motivation more for the players. “I want this negative record to give us more motivation, mentality and energy to win a game. We have the qualities to win this game. “It’s a derby against a very good team and coach.
They have a clear style of play, great players but also the Tottenham players are very good. The level of the players is high. "We have to show together as a team, not as individuals.”
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi faces the media ahead of their trip to rivals Chelsea on Saturday, live on Sky Sports. Spurs go to Stamford Bridge for the 5. 30pm kick-off fresh off their first league win of the season after Monday's 3-1 home victory over Coventry.
The much-needed win saw Dejan Kulusevski make his long-awaited return from injury, while James Maddison scored a stunning opener on his first start in 536 days. De Zerbi will be asked about the fitness of those two, as well as updates on Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Tosin Adarabioyo and Omar Marmoush.
The Italian will also look ahead to the London derby as Spurs aim for a rare win at the Blues, where they have won just one of their last 36 league visits to Stamford Bridge (D11 L24). A look at some of the best goals Tottenham have scored against Chelsea.
By Dev TrehanYesterday marked exactly five years since north Londoner Dilan Markanday made a historic debut for Tottenham Hotspur, becoming the first British South Asian ever to play for the men’s first team. Markanday made his Spurs debut under former Tottenham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, coming off the bench in a Europa Conference League group stage game away at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem on October 21, 2021.
“It was such a big part of my career (at Spurs),” Markanday, who is now at Chesterfield, told Sky Sports News. “Being able to make my debut for them was such an amazing moment, a historic moment being the first British South Asian to play for the first team at Tottenham. No-one can take that away from me.
“I'm very grateful for that and I still get messages from Tottenham fans on social media and they always show me their support, and they love seeing me do well. I owe a lot to them and I'm very grateful.” It was a debut that could have come even earlier, with former Spurs boss and current Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho a keen admirer of Markanday’s talent. “Jose did like me to be fair,” Markanday said.
“I think you know had he stayed on longer I think I feel like I would have got a bit more of an opportunity. But that's football, isn't it? “Managers come and go, and when Nuno came in, he [also] liked what he saw when I was training.
“It was great that I was always in and around training with the first team and able to show myself and, you know, I got that opportunity based on merit, based on training well with the first team. “It's great that he recognised that and it was such a great experience. I think I was on the bench a few times that season as well.
“Just to be in and around such top players, players who I've aspired to and have watched on TV when I was younger, was an amazing experience.”
Referees' chief Howard Webb said Rodrigo Bentancur's red card and Luke Shaw's yellow card after the pair clashed in Tottenham's 1-1 draw at Manchester United were "absolutely the right outcome". Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Shaw after retaliating for being pushed over by the United left-back at Old Trafford in October." When players make contact with their head, they're running a really high risk.
It's seen as a violent act," said Webb." When we apply the laws of the game, we differentiate between the neck, face and head compared to contact into the chest. For us not to send off for contact into the face or head, it has to be deemed negligible and in this case it's not." It's a fairly forceful act by Bentancur. You could argue the push by Shaw is also forceful but it's in the chest.
You don't often see players sent off for pushes to the chest." A yellow card for Luke Shaw, but it has to be a red card for Bentancur reacting in the way he does with his head."
Dejan Kulusevski has promised a better version of himself and Tottenham after he ended an “impossible” journey with a first appearance in 526 days during Monday’s 3-1 win over Coventry. Kulusevski was introduced to deafening noise in the 87th minute, putting behind him 17 months of injury hell after what was described as a “knock” in the 2024-25 campaign turned into a potentially career-threatening issue.
Surgery on his right patella in May last year was followed by multiple setbacks, but a second procedure in March finally set the 26-year-old Swedish attacker on the road to recovery before his long-awaited return in Spurs’ first Premier League victory of the season. “Everything feels great. I have been working harder than you can ever imagine,” Kulusevski said. “The journey felt impossible.
It was the most difficult it could be, but I had a feeling I was going to come back to play football. I just had to believe, and that is what I do. “No, never (did I lose belief). It seemed impossible. I had to tell my closest ones it might not work out, just a couple of months ago, but in my heart, I always knew it would work out.
“I kept working, 10 hours every day when no-one is watching, so when everything was impossible and everyone gave up, I never gave up because of this that happened today. “I am so grateful that (fans) miss me play. It means a lot and I am here to show them a better me. And a better me will be a better Spurs so we will be good.”
Tottenham had managed only three home league wins during Kulusevski’s lengthy absence and narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season. Spurs have missed the quality and the character of Kulusevski and James Maddison, who marked his first start in 536 days with a goal and man-of-the-match display against Coventry.
Kulusevski missed the club’s Europa League triumph, never featured under Thomas Frank or Igor Tudor, and had to sit out Sweden’s World Cup campaign, but is now ready to make up for lost time and feels he returns “a little bit smarter”. “It was amazing,” he said. “It was more emotional I think this morning. It was a beautiful day and I’m so happy we won. “I will tell everyone about the journey.
It has been an amazing journey even if it is hard sometimes. Hard is beautiful and I am so grateful that I had to experience it. “Now I am ready to play football. I see myself a little different now. I think I am a different man now. Same guy, same guy that wants to play football, but a little bit smarter. “I was not (nervous). I was ready to play and it was fun. “Imagine when everyone gives up on you.
You know football for me is like breathing. Imagine you can’t breathe for two years? “But still you have a family, you show up, you do it with a smile, you go with your team-mates, you hype them up and that takes a lot of love, a lot of courage and a lot of belief.” On head coach Roberto De Zerbi, Kulusevski said: “He’s amazing. I like him a lot and I can’t wait to keep working with him.”
Frank Lampard believes Omar Marmoush's winner for Spurs should have been disallowed for an elbow to the face of Milan van Ewijk.
Tottenham goalscorer James Maddison to Sky Sports on his goal:"They are the ones you dream of. "Those dark days recovering from the ACL you dream of those moments and those goals. That is always the light at the end of the tunnel." That is why I felt really emotional and proud of Dejan Kulusevski today because I knew exactly that feeling he had stepping back onto the pithc after that amont of time out.
"Those moments and those goals they make it all worth it."
