Rodri, Barcelona'da saha içi liderliğe uzanan farklı kariyerini sürdürüyor

While a generation of players build personal brands and chase clicks, the Barcelona and Spain midfielder stays away from social media and avoids the spotlight, talking about tactics the way other players talk about cars.

He is, by his own admission, an introvert who happens to control football games for a living.

The 30-year-old won 12 major trophies with Man City and helped Spain to European Championship and World Cup successes.

On Saturday, he insisted his successes with Man City could not be taken away from them after the club were found guilty of breaking the majority of the 115 financial rules they were accused of breaching by the Premier League. City are set to appeal against the ruling.

He also won the Ballon d'Or in 2024 and is in contention to win it for a second time in October, a rare achievement for a holding midfielder.

From a Connecticut summer camp through a Castellon lecture hall to a Champions League final, Rodri has shown the willingness to absorb whatever the environment demands, understand why it is being asked of him - and get on with it.

Understanding his temperament and character is also the starting point for understanding why Barcelona, not Real Madrid, is where his career has turned next after leaving Man City in the summer.

Rodri has helped Barcelona to a perfect start in La Liga

Rodri's game was shaped by an education system that treats football intelligence as something to be taught and moulded.

Spanish academies function on the idea that a coach is a teacher first, and Rodri absorbed that from a young age. But he also came out of his comfort zone very early.

At 14, his father wanted him to spend a year at an American high school, but a season in Villarreal's youth ranks made that impossible, so the family found a compromise: a summer camp deep in the Connecticut woods.

That stay left him with the fluent, American-tinged English his Manchester City team-mates would later tease him about, and it is where he watched Spain win the 2010 World Cup, alone by a lake, thousands of miles from home.

His learning accelerated after being released by Atletico Madrid as a teenager, as his body had not caught up with his footballing brain.

Villarreal picked him up, and there the two strands of his life - football and study - ran in parallel. He moved to Castellon, the biggest city near Villarreal, at 17, and enrolled at university to study business administration.

He combined training in the morning with lectures in the afternoon. He cycled to training and lived among students who had no idea their quiet classmate would soon be starting in La Liga.

When he appeared on television one evening, his flatmates realised the boy from accounting class wore the number six shirt for Villarreal. He has since called that period the best of his life.

The rest of his rise is well known. Atletico brought him back in 2018 under Diego Simeone, who sharpened his intensity and competitiveness.

A year later, Manchester City paid his 70m euro release clause, and Guardiola turned him into arguably the finest holding midfielder of his generation.

There were setbacks, including a Champions League final defeat by Chelsea in 2021 that left him unable to speak to his own family afterwards. Two years later came the redemption, the goal that won City the Champions League in 2023.

That goal changed the story of his career. The Euros with Spain came and the Ballon d'Or followed, along with the World Cup title and MVP award that preceded his move to Barcelona this summer.

And you get the feeling his story is far from finished.

Rodri has been open about how seriously he took Real Madrid's interest in him this summer.

Speaking to Spanish sports radio station COPE, he said the club behaved impeccably and pursued him properly from the first approach.

He spoke to many in and around the club, and admitted the warmth of those conversations made his eventual decision harder.

New manager Jose Mourinho communicated his footballing idea clearly and what he wanted from Rodri personally, and that approach appealed to him.

Inside Real, the sense that Rodri was the player they needed went well beyond the coach.

Several figures at the club still regard him as the profile the squad is missing now, a controlling midfielder capable of dictating tempo in a way nobody currently on the books quite replicates.

The scale of Mourinho's pursuit reflected a genuine conviction that Rodri was required. Madrid have not gone out and found an alternative version of what he would have given them, so the gap the midfielder would have filled remains a gap.

Rodri's reasons for turning that interest down was footballing rather than personal.

His decision came down to where he could grow and contribute most, a project built around a squad full of young players, many of whom he knew already, and who fitted the way he understands the game.

It was a decision about which team needed what he offers, and where he could make the biggest difference.

Rodri is a footballing encyclopaedia and, many would argue, the best defensive midfielder in the world.

There are few better when it comes to positional play, and he is one of the very best because of what he does himself and what he brings out in his team-mates.

Without the ball, both in the press and when dropping back, he gives that sense of security in front of the defence, especially in those moments when Barcelona lose the ball.

But he is also outstanding with the ball because he distributes it quickly and always chooses the right route. You can see all that in every Barcelona game.

His arrival has been described inside the club as one of the most significant developments of recent years on and off the pitch - playing in all but one match of Barcelona's perfect start to the campaign.

For a squad that lost several senior voices in recent seasons, Rodri's experience in high-pressure moments has added a stability that had been missing.

He has taken on an informal mentoring role with the club's academy graduates, several of whom already regard him as a reference point.

He explains rather than simply demonstrates, an instinct that has surprised the coaching staff as much as his football has.

He does not wear the captain's armband, and probably will not for some time, but inside the dressing room many already talk about him as a captain in everything but title.

Boss Hansi Flick made clear from day one that Barcelona had signed a type of midfielder they did not have, but also a reference point for a squad in the middle of rebuilding.

His partnership with Pedri has emerged as one of the more encouraging signs, as there were doubts about it.

The two combine naturally, managing tempo and sharing the responsibility for circulating the ball. Flick sees them capable of controlling matches through positioning, possession and reading of the game rather than athleticism.

Asked to compare Flick with Guardiola, Rodri was unambiguous: they are nothing alike.

He has spoken about arriving at Barcelona expecting rondos and possession drills, only to be met with days of gruelling physical work in the gym.

Guardiola trusted competition to build match sharpness. Flick has taken a different route with the players who arrived later in pre-season, working them hard from the outset.

And as you would expect from his CV and personality, Rodri has adapted to it rather than resisted it.
