Zinedine Zidane watched France drop points at home to Italy in a 1-1 draw at Stade de France. Michael Olise followed up his wonderful strike against Belgium with an exceptional free-kick off the crossbar after 55 minutes, but Italy replied 13 minutes later.
Lucas da Cunha was caught on the ball by a rampaging Alessandro Bastoni, who finished like a forward before France ended with 10 men after Dayot Upamecano received a second yellow card. Kevin De Bruyne produced a vintage display to inspire Belgium to a 3-0 win over Turkey in the Nations League.
Former Manchester City playmaker De Bruyne opened the scoring after nine minutes with a fine low finish before he added an explosive second in the 59th minute when he sumptuously curled into the top corner from range. Romelu Lukaku rounded off the scoring with 14 minutes left to move Belgium up to second and one point behind leaders France in Group One of Nations League A.
In Group Two of Nations League B, Northern Ireland recorded an impressive 3-0 win in an away tie with Ukraine thanks to Ciaron Brown’s brace. Isaac Price was also on target for Michael O’Neill’s young side. Liverpool full-back Milos Kerkez scored the only goal in the other group tie to earn Hungary a 1-0 win over Georgia.
Edin Dzeko brought the curtain down on a wonderful international career during Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 1-1 draw with Sweden. Dzeko was withdrawn after 63 minutes of his 152nd appearance for his country with Bosnia trailing after Viktor Gyokeres scored two minutes earlier, but Kerim Alajbegovic ensured the spoils would be shared with an 80th-minute effort.
In the other Group Four match in Nations League B, Poland thumped Romania by a 6-0 scoreline with Robert Lewandowki hitting a hat-trick after Radu Dragusin, on loan at Fiorentina from Tottenham, was sent off in the 22nd minute for Romania.
Portugal boss Jorge Jesus insisted there is “nothing” that should stop the group from “being with me” after Cristiano Ronaldo left their training camp. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward announced on Instagram on Wednesday that he had left the training camp after discussions with Portuguese Football Federation present Pedro Proenca.
Ronaldo started during Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales last Thursday and was on the bench for their 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday, but did not feature. Following Ronaldo’s departure, Portugal returned to action with a 4-2 win over Denmark on Thursday, a third straight win that keeps them top of Group A4 and Jesus is determined to focus on their next game against Norway on Sunday. “I do.
There’s nothing that should stop the group from being with me,” Jesus told Sport TV, in quotes reported on Sapo when asked about whether he feels the group is with him after the Ronaldo case. “I understand the question. The important thing is what we have to do. The things that happen don’t separate the group, they haven’t separated us and they won’t separate us.”
Asked if he would accept Ronaldo back if he wanted to return, Jesus said post-match: “A high-quality victory, with four goals, a top-level performance. It can’t be overlooked, it’s more important than everything that happened. “That’s what I want to focus on. Returning to Portugal, the people will fight at the Dragao stadium.”
Bruno Fernandes provided two assists on his return from injury as Portugal brushed off the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo to beat Denmark 4-2 in the Nations League. New Portugal boss Jorge Jesus maintains his perfect start to the job with a third straight win despite the distraction of the country's greatest ever goalscorer walking out of the camp on the eve of the game.
Fernandes wore the captain's armband in Ronaldo's absence and showed no sign of the injury, which kept him from featuring in the squad for Portugal's win over Norway, hindering him. The Man Utd skipper set up goals for AC Milan's Goncalo Ramos, who was starting up front in Ronaldo's position for a second consecutive game, and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha.
Fernandes' club-mate Diogo Dalot set up Joao Felix for Portugal's fourth goal after coming off the bench to replace Joao Cancelo, who scored their opener in the first half. Former United striker Rasmus Hojlund scored Denmark's second and paid tribute to Ronaldo by replicating his trademark celebration.
Brentford's Mikkel Damsgaard set up Hojlund's goal and scored Denmark's opener, finding the net for the second time in three games during this international break. Portugal top Group A3 and boast a six-point advantage over the rest of the teams after Wales produced a shock win over 10-man Norway in Cardiff.
Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi has purchased second-division Spanish side Eldense, the club has confirmed. The Inter Miami star is already the owner of Catalan club Cornella, who play in the fifth tier of Spanish football, after acquiring them in April. Confirming the news, Eldense said Messi's acquisition begins "a new and exciting stage" for the club.
The statement added: "The arrival in Spanish professional football as owner of CD Eldense of one of the most important figures in the history of sport marks the beginning of a long-term project with the aim of boosting the sporting, institutional and social development of CD Eldense." Messi's takeover is pending approval from Spain's National Sports Council.
By acquiring Eldense, the former Barcelona star will once again be a direct rival of Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he battled for the crown of world's best player for more than a decade. Ronaldo is a co-owner of Almeria, a second-division Spanish side, and their teams are currently scheduled to play each other in May at Eldense.
Almeria won the home fixture against Eldense in August in a convincing 3-0 victory.
Real Madrid have sent UEFA a “substantial” amount of new documents concerning the Negreira case, European football’s governing body has announced.
UEFA said the documents from Real will be assessed by its ethics and disciplinary inspectors as part of their ongoing review of the case, which centres on payments from Barcelona to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the Spanish football federation’s technical committee of referees (CTA).
Barcelona say the payments were for scouting and technical reports provided by Negreira on officials, but it has been alleged previously that the money was being used to bribe referees. Real say the new dossier they have handed over to UEFA details “evidence of extraordinary gravity, which directly affect the integrity of the competition and confidence in the refereeing system”.
A statement from Los Blancos read: “Real Madrid CF considers it essential that, once UEFA has this documentation, the investigation progresses as quickly as possible until its complete conclusion and that the competent bodies adopt the corresponding decisions in accordance with the seriousness of the proven facts.
“Our club will continue to actively collaborate with UEFA and take all the actions within its power to clarify facts that it considers incompatible with the principles of integrity, transparency and fair play that should govern European football.”
A statement from UEFA read: “UEFA can confirm that it has received from Real Madrid CF a substantial amount of documents related to the ongoing investigation into FC Barcelona in the matter involving Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the technical committee of referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (the so-called “Negreira matter”).
“The UEFA ethics and disciplinary inspectors have also received these latest documents which they will assess as part of their ongoing review.” It has been reported that Real’s dossier is more than 50,000 pages long. Barcelona said in a statement: “UEFA has not opened any new disciplinary proceedings against FC Barcelona.
The proceedings began in 2023 with the appointment of two investigators, who have since carried out the actions they deemed necessary. “The club has always complied with all their requests. These proceedings have not been reopened because they were never closed.
“The UEFA statement…does not announce the opening, reopening, or reactivation of any case, nor does it contain any pronouncement on the substance or value of the submitted documentation. “It is up to the investigators to determine what actions they deem appropriate regarding this documentation.
As of today, they have not made any new requests to FC Barcelona nor have they forwarded Real Madrid’s complaint to the club. When they do, the club will respond appropriately, as it has done thus far. “In accordance with the applicable legislation, this file is subject to the outcome of the criminal proceedings taking place in Spain and will remain therein.
“Since the start of the investigation, FC Barcelona has continued to obtain UEFA licenses without objection and has participated in its competitions.”
Portuguese football journalist Pedro Sepulveda explains the fallout between Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus and why it could be the end of an era for the national team.
Despite there being reports that his departure is an 'irreversible decision', his number being reassigned does not completely spell the end for his 23-year international career. UEFA rules state that player shirt numbers must be sequential depending on their squad size, so numbers one to 23 must be given to players, or 26 if that is the size of the team.
Francisco Trincao, Pedro Neto and Goncalo Guedes have previously worn the No 7 in Ronaldo's absence, who himself inherited it from Luis Figo.
Lianne Sanderson says she still loves Cristiano Ronaldo but could him leaving the Portugal camp tarnish his legacy?
Cristiano Ronaldo has made the "irreversible decision" not to return to the national team after walking out of Portugal's camp, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo. The report sensationally claims that last week's match against Wales will go down in history as Ronaldo's final appearance for Portugal after a glittering 23-year international career.
Neither Portugal nor Ronaldo have confirmed that the 41-year-old has called quits on his career with the national team at this stage. This report from O Jogo emerged shortly after Ronaldo announced he had left Portugal's camp in Copenhagen ahead of Thursday's Nations League match against Denmark.
The 41-year-old, who had held talks with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation Pedro Proenca, vowed to tell "the truth" about his reasons for leaving in a post on Instagram. Reports in Portugal had claimed there was a rift between Ronaldo and the national team's new head coach, Jorge Jesus, after the Al Nassr star was left as an unused substitue in Sunday's 2-1 win over Norway.
Jesus insisted there was no issue between the pair in his Wednesday news conference but added: “I’m the one who makes the decisions and everybody knows that.” Ronaldo holds the record for most goals scored and most caps won in international men's football after producing 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.
Norway defender Kristoffer Ajer says football’s “biggest star” Erling Haaland has not changed at all after Manchester City were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. Haaland will play for the first time on Thursday since an independent commission delivered a damning verdict on City, saying the club had artificially inflated their income by £900m over a nine-year period.
Wales will host Norway in a Nations League fixture at Cardiff City Stadium, when Haaland will be in the spotlight and seeking to add to his extraordinary international record of 65 goals in 57 games. “Ever since I met him brings lot of energy and joy to the group,” said Brentford centre-back Ajer when asked about Haaland’s demeanour in the Norway camp since City’s guilty verdict was announced on Tuesday.
“That’s the biggest compliment I always give, he hasn’t changed a bit from the moment I met him, even though he’s the the biggest star on the planet right now. “He been exactly the same the last few days as well which is is not a surprise for me.” Reports of City’s guilty verdict first surfaced in the media on Friday.
Haaland scored against Portugal in a 2-1 defeat two days later, after earlier scoring two versus Denmark to extend his record as the Nations League’s all-time top scorer to 22. Ajer said: “He’s the best player in the world if you ask me, so hopefully he scores a few tomorrow as well. “I have to admit that honestly I’ve read very little into it (the City situation). We don’t talk about it much here.
“Obviously, it was a statement released yesterday, so it’s quite fresh and new. “But we’re just footballers, we don’t know all the ins and outs and all the stuff that’s being talked about in the media. “So we haven’t really had any fantastic discussions about it where we know a lot.”
