Sky Sports' Adam Bate at Old Trafford:"Looking forward to seeing Roma even if they are not quite full strength. Their only defeat this season came against Real Madrid and that one was a 4-3 loss so this should be fun." They are the top scorers in Serie A with as many goals away from home as in front of their own fans.
Indeed, only Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have scored more goals away from home in Europe’s major leagues this season."
These two teams have a rich history against each other and have produced some memorable moments throughout the years.
Sky Sports' Paul Merson believes that Manchester United's poor recruitment will see the club slip into the relegation zone before Christmas rolls around.
Ex-Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag had plenty to say about his former employers current demise. Sky Sports' Jay Bothroyd and Tim Sherwood shared their thoughts on the Dutchman claiming the club were truly in a relegation battle.
Paul Merson on Soccer Special:"I think he's quite confident at the moment, Carrick. He talks quite positively. I think he knows the score. I don't think anyone would want to take over before the Liverpool, that's just my opinion. "They just need to get the first goal. If they don't get the first goal tonight, I'll be surprised if they come back.
If they get the first goal, there's a few players who can play and they will want the ball."
Gian Piero Gasperini is not getting “hung up” on Manchester United’s miserable form as the Roma boss attempts to mastermind a famous Old Trafford triumph. Michael Carrick’s Red Devils limp into Tuesday’s Champions League encounter on the back of a nine-match winless streak that has included defeats away to Atletico Madrid and Como.
The 4-1 defeat at Cesc Fabregas’ ever-improving side a fortnight ago sent United into a tailspin that they are desperate to end against a Roma side buoyed by their unbeaten start to the Serie A season. Head coach Gasperini said: “Obviously Manchester United is struggling somewhat in terms of results in the Premier League at the moment.
“But we can’t get distracted and too hung up on that situation because we know that Manchester United is a strong team, we know that they have top players in their squad. “We know what the atmosphere is going to be like here as well. “They make things very difficult for the opposition here at Old Trafford, so we’ll be playing tomorrow’s game as if we’re playing against Manchester United at the top of its form.”
Gasperini, who at 68 knows the ups and down of management as well as anybody, continued: “I don’t really know why Manchester United are experiencing the difficulties that they are at the moment. “But what I do know is that Manchester United is made up of very strong players and sometimes you go through a hard time, but then you get back on track and you start getting good results.
“I hope that is what happens to Manchester United. After tomorrow, obviously.” Roma have lost all four previous trips to Old Trafford, including a 7-1 defeat in 2007 which saw Carrick hit a brace in an unforgettable Champions League quarter-final second leg.
The midfielder was still playing for United when Marten de Roon spent the 2016-17 campaign with Middlesbrough and the experienced Roma star said: “I looked up to him. “He was a great midfielder, a great passer of the ball, understood the game very well. “Played in one of the strongest Manchester United teams that we have ever seen, so, yeah, lots of respect for him.
“We are looking forward to tomorrow and to have a great night in a fantastic stadium. “It’s a strong team. We shouldn’t underestimate them because of the results lately. But, for sure, we want to make a great result tomorrow.”
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick speaking with Amazon Prime:"Big challenge. It's what you expect. They've had a really good start to the season. Credit to them for that. That's why we want to be in this competition. To challenge yourself against good teams and try and come out on top and try to be the best." On dropping Lisandro Martinez:"You've got to pick a team. We've got a good squad.
We've changed one or two in recent weeks. We've made that decision tonight." On pairing Kobbie Mainoo and Carlos Baleba:"We've got some really good midfielders. Andrey and Carlos have played recently together. Kobbie is back fit and we felt it was a good stage to put him back in. You'd like to think they complement each other with their attributes."
